Weddings
When preparing for a wedding at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church or another Serbian Orthodox parish, families can expect a ceremony steeped in profound spiritual meaning and cultural traditions. The service emphasizes the sanctity of marriage as a divine institution and centers on the couple’s commitment to a Christ-centered life together.
The Ceremony
The Orthodox wedding service consists of two primary parts: the Betrothal and the Crowning. During the Betrothal, rings are exchanged to symbolize mutual commitment and the couple's unity in Christ. In the Crowning ceremony, the priest places crowns on the bride and groom, signifying their roles as "king and queen" of their household and their spiritual journey together. These crowns are often linked with themes of martyrdom, humility, and the couple’s shared responsibility in their marriage.
The couple also participates in the "Common Cup" ritual, drinking blessed wine as a reminder of Christ's presence in their union and their commitment to sharing life’s blessings and challenges. A ceremonial procession called the "Dance of Isaiah" concludes the service, where the couple takes their first steps together as husband and wife, accompanied by hymns that express joy and divine guidance.
Traditions and Community
Serbian Orthodox weddings are richly embedded in cultural customs that extend beyond the church ceremony. Before the wedding, it is traditional for the groom to “claim” his bride from her family, often involving symbolic negotiations or playful challenges. At the reception, highlights include the “kolo” dance, which brings guests together in a lively circle dance to celebrate unity and joy. Family and friends often participate in the "money dance," pinning money on the couple as a gesture of support.
Roles of Sponsors
The kum (best man) and kuma (maid of honor) play vital roles, offering spiritual and practical guidance to the couple. Their relationship with the newlyweds often extends throughout their lives, symbolizing a deep bond of kinship.
Hospitality
Traditional Serbian hospitality features prominently during the wedding day. Guests enjoy elaborate meals, including dishes such as sarma (stuffed cabbage), ćevapi (grilled sausages), and a variety of desserts like kolace. Rakija, a traditional Serbian brandy, is often served and holds cultural significance as a symbol of celebration.
By blending deep spiritual practices with vibrant cultural traditions, a Serbian Orthodox wedding offers a profound and joyous experience, celebrating the couple’s new life together while emphasizing their faith and community
